In Sanskrit, the word Magh translates to ‘Honour.’ The meaning of Magha nakshatra is ‘The Magnificent.’ The deity of the nakshatra of Magha is the ‘Pitris’ or our ‘ancestors.’ Pitri Paksha means the ‘fourth night of the ancestors’, is a 16 lunar day time period in the Hindu calendar when individuals offer food to their ancestors. When Karna who is the unsung hero of the Mahabharata died, he was welcomed in heaven and offered gold and jewels. When Karna realize that he needs real food, he went to Yama and asked him the reason behind this. Yama told Karna that he donated gold and jewels throughout his life but never cared to donate food to his ancestors. Therefore, Karna was sent back on the earth for a time of 15 days to offer food to his ancestors. This 15 days period is celebrated as Pitru paksha where food is offered to our ancestors.
